When we think of the oldest universities in the world, names like Oxford or Bologna often come to mind. But did you know that the oldest existing, and continually operating educational institution in the world was founded by a Muslim woman?
A Visionary Pioneer
Her name was Fatima al-Fihri. Born in the 9th century, she migrated with her family from Kairouan (in modern-day Tunisia) to Fez, Morocco. After the death of her father and husband, Fatima inherited a significant fortune. A devout woman, she wanted to give back to her community in a way that would grant her Sadaqah Jariyah—a continuous charity that benefits people long after one’s death.
In 859 CE, she used her inheritance to purchase land and construct a mosque and a place of learning. This institution, the University of Al-Qarawiyyin, became a major spiritual and educational center.
More Than Just a School
Al-Qarawiyyin attracted scholars from all over the known world. It wasn't just for religious studies; the curriculum included grammar, logic, medicine, mathematics, and astronomy. Famous scholars like the historian Ibn Khaldun and the geographer Al-Idrisi are associated with this prestigious institution.
The Guinness World Records and UNESCO both recognize Al-Qarawiyyin as the oldest university in the world. Fatima’s story is a powerful reminder that:
- Education is central to Islam: The pursuit of knowledge is a duty for every Muslim.
- Women are pioneers: Muslim women have been at the forefront of community building and philanthropy for centuries.
