If you are building an app, a community, or stepping into corporate management, leadership is an inevitable requirement. In the 10th century, the philosopher Al-Farabi wrote Al-Madina Al-Fadila (The Virtuous City), outlining the precise characteristics required of a true leader.

Al-Farabi argued that a city (or a company) takes on the psychological health of its leader. If the leader is driven by ego and base desires, the organization becomes corrupt. If the leader possesses high emotional intelligence and intellect, the organization flourishes.

The 3 Pillars of Farabian Leadership

  1. Intellectual Capacity: A leader must be relentlessly dedicated to learning. You cannot lead if you do not understand the mechanics of the terrain you are navigating.
  2. Emotional Regulation: Al-Farabi stressed that a leader must be free from the volatility of anger and greed. True leadership requires the emotional intelligence to delay gratification and make decisions based on justice, not ego.
  3. Persuasive Communication: Vision is useless if it cannot be articulated. A leader must master the art of rhetoric and storytelling to inspire their community to move toward a shared, virtuous goal.
